Barcelona has a wide variety of excellent restaurants, and eating out is an enjoyable aspect of the Mediterranean lifestyle. However, whether you’re a resident or a tourist staying in a rental apartment, there may be moments when you prefer to have a meal delivered to eat in the comfort of your own space. There are now many more options than the typical fast-food pizza call out, and the new Deliveroo website and app have it covered for you, providing a delivery service from many local restaurants.
What is Deliveroo?
After moving from New York to London, co-founders Will Shu and Greg Orlowski realized that they weren’t able to get all of the food they wanted delivered, and decided to do something about it by themselves. The Deliveroo website and phone app was founded in 2012 and is already established in 12 different countries. It allows users to choose one of their many affiliated restaurants and order through them.
How it works
Ordering a meal through the Deliveroo website is simple: all it requires is your address. Deliveroo will then list all of the restaurants in that area that deliver to you, so you can select exactly what kind of meal you’d like. After putting together your order on their website, Deliveroo takes care of the rest and will deliver to your door, all in an average time of 32 minutes per order. The real kicker, however, is that Deliveroo’s fee is a fixed €2.50 per delivery. For a company that is becoming more and more widespread in Barcelona, not to mention Spain in general, this is great value.
Something else unique about Deliveroo is that they don’t use cars at all. In fact, all of the self-employed drivers that carry the food either ride on good old-fashioned bicycles or on motorbikes. In addition, when ordering during their delivery times of 12:00-23:00, all purchases of food must be done by card. While tips are not required, Deliveroo drivers keep 100% of all tips, so it’s up to you on how you feel that they did.
