Don’t miss your chance to experience one of the most beloved operas of all time, by Giacomo Puccini, with Madame Butterfly at Liceu Opera Barcelona. The performances take place from the 12th-29th January, with two first-class castings. Lianna Haroutonian is one of the best Butterflies of the moment and has just had great success at the Vienna Opera with this role. Ainhoa Arteta performs her debut of this role in these functions. At their side will be the tenors Jorge de León and Rame Lahaj.

This is the return of the classic production by Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier which has already received great critical and public acclaim in previous seasons. All the functions will be directed by the maestro Giampaolo Bisanti, who returns to the Liceu after some memorable functions of Macbeth and who is one of the most esteemed conductors of the great international opera houses.

Madame Butterfly at Liceu Opera Barcelona is an opera full of unforgettable moments, which reach beyond the famous aria Un bel di vedremo sung by Butterfly at the beginning of Act II, such as the romantic duo Bimba dagli occhi that closes the act I and is one of the best romantic duos ever written by Puccini.

The opera takes place around 1900 in the city of Nagasaki, when the American marine B. F. Pinkerton arrives in Japan and arranges a marriage with a young Japanese lady, Cio-Cio-San (Madame Butterfly). This marriage is a simple pastime while he is Japan, as Pinkerton aims to return to the US and marry an American woman. Once he leaves, Butterfly gives birth to a boy and spends the next three years waiting for Pinkerton’s return. He eventually does come back, but only to collect his son and bring him to America with his new wife. Butterfly cannot endure the pain and takes her life by harakiri.
