La Mercè
Just when you thought the summer was over the party-loving city of Barcelona bites back with the big one! This spectacular street festival spills out from many stages and venues throughout the city, with over 600 activities and events including music, fireworks and traditional parades. It dates back to 1902 and was originally a religious occasion to commemorate the city’s Patron Saint, La Mare de Déu de la Mercè.
Every folkloric element of local tradition is represented; from the towering castellers, or human castles that can reach up to nine storeys high, to epic correfocs, with dancing devils skipping through the streets brandishing twirling fireworks alongside fire-breathing dragons.
The festivities come to a rousing finale with an epic firework display in Plaça España.

Red Hot Chili Peppers @ Palau Sant Jordi
Coming to Barcelona this October 1st and 2nd is world-renowned rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers, at Palau Sant Jordi. The American rock band formed in 1983, and has a unique genre style of playing rock with a primarily funk-like feeling, while taking elements from punk rock and psychedelic rock. However, even if you’ve heard their recorded music, don’t miss out on seeing them live; the Red Hot Chili Peppers are known to improvise a lot during their concerts, so no two shows will be exactly the same. Also, make sure to get tickets as soon as possible, because they will sell out and increase in price. So come see one of the most famous rock bands and enjoy the show! Blanca Haddad’s second solo exhibition opens in Barcelona's recently inaugurated Nau Bostik gallery space in the Sagrera neighbourhood.
Born in Venezuela but having worked in Barcelona since 2006, Haddad’s exhibition explores the female gaze as it falls on other women - a change from the ever present male gaze in the arts, something that a number of women artists are looking to change.
Based on previously published poems, this exhibition aims to empower women as onlookers and as painters, wth the aim of creating “poetic justice”. If you are looking for bold brushwork and food for thought, this exhibition is for you! Think a female Basquiat.
The exhibition is open Thursday to Sunday 11:00 - 20:00

In a world full of preferences and opinions, there’s one thing that most people can agree on: movies are pretty great. Each one tells a completely different story from the last, and draws in its viewers with an intriguing plot, witty one-liners and spectacular effects. It’s due to the appreciation of movies that events such as the Sitges Film Festival do so well. For this year’s 49th Sitges Film Festival, the theme is one of the most recognized franchises in film and tv history: Star Trek.
Taking place between October 7th and 16th, Sitges celebrates Star Trek and its history of five TV series, animated 2D series and twelve films, a bunch of video and role games, and hundreds of novels and short stories. In addition to this, the Sitges Film Festival is also taking a look at the Soviet retrospective with a number of genre films from 1957 to 1978 produced in presently inexistent states (such as the USSR and Czechoslovakia). However, not all films are made by professionals; for the seventh year, the SGAE Nova Autoria program brings Catalan film students and their creations to the big screen.
For more information about the festival, visit their website.
