The mountain and monastery of Montserrat is one of the most emblematic places in Catalonia, not only for its beautiful scenery, but especially for its historical, political and religious meaning. Within one day you can visit the monastery, walk around to discover deserted hermitages or sample the regional gastronomy.
Montserrat is approximately 40km from Barcelona and can be reached by train, bus or car. Undoubtedly it´s worth visiting to consume the beauty of its majestic mountain which has for years beckoned the best artists world wide. The mountain’s highest peak is 1,236 meters above sea level and in translation its name means "saw - toothed" mountain, referring to its jagged peaks. Equally interesting is the Monastery that stood strong in the defense of its Catalan culture and language at a time when Franco ruled. The Monastery was built in the 700 - 800’s. Many visit the restored church to see the "Black Virgin" the patron saint of Catalonia. As a point of interest Christopher Columbus also brought Indians to pay their respects to this church.
