Less than an hour from Girona lays Figueres, the birthplace of Dalí. This is where he built his own Museum in the Dalí style. There are three places any Dalí worshipper should visit in his life. One is the house he built and subsequently lived in Port Lligat, next to Cadaques, the second is the Castle in Púbol where he spent much of his later life with his beloved “wife” Gala and of course the Dalí museum in Figueres.

When joining the Discover Barcelona tour you will have approx. 1½ hours to browse the magnitude of Dalí’s imagination, which is a bit rushed if you are an advocate of his works but plenty of time to get a very surrealistic impression of a very surrealistic man. It becomes obvious that Dalí’s craftsmanship extends throughout all areas of art imaginable and his love for capturing the three dimensionality of objects in a two dimensional way is not just fascinating but enlightening. Using holograms projected onto rotating cylinders to create 360º views; Painting two paintings of the same scene and overlaying them using mirrors to create a kind of 3D experience; using light and shadow beyond the perception of the human eye, as impressively displayed in his “Hidden Lincoln”; creating furniture in a fashion and layout to imitate a human face, only fully appreciable when viewing the room through a curved lens. All these are just a few of his games he liked to play on reality.
You can also view many of Dalí’s fine paintings in the museum, whereas the most famous and prestigious works are held by American and Japanese individuals and reside in private ownership. Dalí painted and created many pieces against payment, describing himself as a whore of the arts, selling out to the highest bidder. Nevertheless, the collections held in the museum today include many recognisable themes based on the same influences as his most famous work and you’ll have plenty to marvel at.

Once you have finished with the Museum and the museum shop you might want to visit the Dalí Jewels, a splendid display of his finest craftsmanship in jewellery, just round the corner of the exit of the Museum. Make sure to have the ticket you bought for the museum ready for inspection before you enter through the heavy iron turning doors, as it also gives you access to this fine collection of Dalí art.
