Punk. Its traces in contemporary art

0

macbaBorn between 1976-78 in London and New York, the punk subculture is mainly associated with music, however, its influences are ever present in all forms of expression, including art. Usually straightforward with clear messages, and using minimalistic and satirical sensibilities, punk art is often concerned with political issues such as social injustice and economic disproportion. The use of images of suffering to shock and create feelings of empathy in the viewer is common, although alternatively, punk artwork may contain images of selfishness, stupidity or apathy to provoke contempt in the viewer.

MACBA presents this coproduced exhibition featuring over sixty artists, both national and international. The exhibition focuses on both the journey punk has taken in terms of its influence on contemporary art and also the importance it still has today as an attitude and as a reference point for many creators.

The exhibition uses installations, documentary excerpts, multiples, photographs, videos and paintings to address themes including noise, denial, violence, nihilism and sexuality.

When: 13 May to 15 September.
Where: MACBA, Plaça dels Àngels (Metro: Universitat)
Price: €10.
