Specialist Foods
Despite how delicious the food here in Barcelona is, whilst in another county you’re bound to have cravings for all the food you’re used to from home. When you head to the supermarkets here you will often find that they don’t stock all of the food you’re used to. But, by visiting the specialist food shops there’s barely anything you can’t get your hands on.
If its English specialities you miss then there are plenty of English supermarkets catering to the ex-pat community in Barcelona. ‘A taste of home’ is an English supermarket on Carrer de Florida Blanca where you can get everything from Twining’s tea to corned beef.
There are also shops which cater to people with a more specific diet, El Corte Ingles (Catalunya) has a specialist food store and on Via Laietana there is a large organic supermarket which has a wide variety of vegan and organic produce. However, both of these shops are fairly expensive and you may find that by visiting the Asian supermarkets around Raval and Gotic you will get the same products a lot cheaper. For finer speciality produce such as meats, cheeses and cava, if you can’t find what you want in a market, there are many delicatessens to be found in the narrow streets of the Ciutat Vella. There is a large oriental shop nest to Pl Universidad, where you can find an astonishing range of ingredients for making all your favourite dishes, from sushi to stir-fries. Latin shops sell their typical packaged goods and sweets. In short, you can be sure to find what you’re looking for, as long as you know where to go.
