Useful information for disabled tourists and travellers in Barcelona

Disabled travellers

Barcelona is yet to fully adapt the city for the requirements of its disabled residents and tourists. Some of the public buildings have wheelchair access and the majority of footpaths and street crossings are suitable for wheelchairs.

Some hotels, shops and restaurants have now adapted their entrances and installed lifts but this is a gradual process and everywhere will not be accessible.

It is transport in the city that presents a problem for people with disabilities. Although it is possible to order special taxis and most buses are wheelchair friendly, the metro still presents a big problem. Most metro stations have lift access but the problem is accessing the train from the platform. Only L2 and L11 are fully adapted and L1 is partly finished. The Catalan government have stated that all of the disabled access problems will be solved by 2012.
