Barcelona Carnival

Barcelona Carnival is one of the most fun and entertaining festivals of the year. Carnival starts with the famous "Fat Thursday" (20 February) and finishes on Ash Wednesday (26 February). Lasting a week, it is one of the longest celebrations in the year. In Barcelona, there are many activities and events over these seven days of Carnival festivities.

“Arribo” means the “arrival”, is carnival's opening event and the moment when the Rei Carnestoltes (the carnival king) will pass by the crowds that await his arrival. The king is the main character of the festival across the whole Catalonia and is a figure that represents the spirit of joy. Aided by his seven ambassadors (one for each historic village of Barcelona, Gràcia, Horta, Les Corts, Sant Andreu, Sant Martí, and Sarrià). This will be part of the festivities on Fat Thursday, found at La Rambla on 20th February.

-Barcelona Carnival: Processions and Parades
Saturday afternoon is usually the day when the Carnival´s procession will take place. Thanks to people´s initiative, some areas of Barcelona organize many of these colorful and festive parades. One of the seven ambassadors for the Carnival king usually joins each of them. This will be on Carnival Saturday in different areas of Barcelona throughout 22nd February.

The Taronjada & the carnival king is one of the most important events in the festival and definitely one that attracts the most people. The Rei Carnestoltes reads out a satirical announcement where he comments on the most important events of the last year. This will be on Carnival Sunday in Passeig Picasso and on various streets in El Born.

L'enterro "the Burial" after several days the Rei Carnestoltes is judged and condemned to be burned to death on Carnival Tuesday. After his death on Ash Wednesday, the final event of the Barcelona Carnival is l´enterro, or the burial, which is also known as the burial of the sardine. The event includes a type of funeral procession with jokey and satirical notes that serve as a farewell to the Rei Carnestoltes and as the start of Lent. This will be on Ash Wednesday in a different place and time for each district on 26th February 2020.

Here are some popular events of the Barcelona Carnival: Els Encants de Carnival at Jardins Sociedad Recreativa, Xatonades at different areas, Arrossada popular at Àngel Vidal 17-23, Carnival bed race Jardins Casino Prado Suburense, Closing dinner at Hall Theatre Casino Prado Suburense and many more.

So make sure you won´t miss out this year’s carnival week in Barcelona to have a wonderful time here and lots of fun!

Some annual festivities include the street party which is organized by Kitty O 'Shea's pub. In years past, everyone was able to enjoy music from DJs and bands while kids were able to play Rugby, do make up, or participate in crafts such as painting in the children's area.

Flaherty's Irish Pub should also be on your go to list for this Irish holiday. This bar located right near the Rambla offers some of the best beers, whiskey, and traditional Irish dishes. On Saint Patrick's Day they offer special discounts on drinks and food along with games and prizes.

It is obvious that Temple bar in Barcelona will also be the perfect place to celebrate the holiday. Green will completely cover this bar and make you second guess whether you are in barcelona or Dublin.

Another option for your Saint Patrick's Day plans may include the Currach Regatta. Whether you want to enter a team or sit back and watch, the atmosphere of this event is unmatched. You can get a taste of the Irish culture in Spain while you eat food, drink guinness and enjoy the Barcelona sun. Festes de Sant Josep Oriol

If you've been searching for an event perfect for children or families then look no further. Festes de Sant Josep Oriol is a great event in Barcelona that allows you to introduce your children to the Spanish culture. This event includes several acts performed by the Gegants del Pi, which are traditional catalan performances that go back centuries. Visitors can expect these performances as well as Catalan folk music in the Gothic quarter the weekend of March 21.

This festival is all in celebration of Sant Josep Oriol, who resided in Ciutat Vella. This saint was known for helping the sick and the poor and is greatly worshipped in Barcelona especially in the Gothic region.

A human towers display can also be expected during this celebration. Human towers is a catalan sport in which gymnasts use only their bodies to build a tower. These towers involve people of all ages including young children who crown the tower. These can be seen at many different festivals throughout Catalonia.

One of the most cherished events of the festival is the parade called Passejada dels Orioles. This parade features the Ciutat Vellas male giants. During the parade the giants give a floral offering to the saint while locals throw chocolate coins. These chocolate coins are very unique and show both the legend of St Josep Oriol and an image of the Pi giant.

During the morning parade you will be jolted awake by the joyous sounds of drummers and musicians. You will see the Giants and beasts participating in traditional dances across the streets as hundreds of spectators come to watch and enjoy.

Don't miss the gathering for the final dance! This is when all the giants, beasts, and heads come together in a celebratory dance to end to the festival.

This event is unlike any other and simply cannot be missed. However you would prefer to celebrate, whether it's eating, drinking, dancing, or listening there is something for people of all ages to enjoy.
