Although there are no physical cats here, this restaurant is named for a Catalan phrase meaning “only a few people.” Inspired by a Parisian tavern, Els Quatre Gats opened its doors in 1897 and operated as a cabaret, hostel, pub, and restaurant. Picasso often frequented Els Quatre Gats at the start of his career as an artist and even housed his first exhibition there. Boasting exquisite food to accompany the eclectic yet classic atmosphere, this restaurant is definitely not something you want to skip out on while visiting Barcelona.

Perhaps one of the most peculiar gardens in Spain, El Jardinet dels Gats is home to a plethora of furry felines. The owners transformed this eye sore of a lot into a sanctuary for stray or abandoned cats, allowing them to have a safe home off of the streets. Located just off of La Rambla, plenty of tourists stop to admire these cats on a daily basis. If you’re traveling through Barcelona and find yourself missing your own cats, they welcome volunteers with open arms.

Situated in the neighborhood of Gràcia, Gato Negro is perfect for a night of bar hopping through the youthful streets of Barcelona. The walls are adorned with art featuring cats of all colors, shapes, and sizes, creating quite a fun atmosphere amongst the chatter and laughter of friends sharing a plate of croquettes or patatas bravas.
