 | If you've recovered from the numerous 'festa majors' over the course of the summer, Barcelona offers up yet another street party this September with its own annual festival celebrating local myth and folklore, in honour of Mare de Déu de la Mercé, the Patron Saint of Barcelona This is truly an event with something for everyone, featuring over 3,000 performers ranging from traditional and contemporary music performances, fireworks, human pyramids, fire-breathing dragons, and story-telling.
This year’s highlights include the likes of Lax n´Busto, Seguridad Social, Blues Picolats, Elèctrica Dharma, El Sueño de Morfeo and Fran Perea in the Plaza del Fòrum. For jazz and Cuban sounds look out for Santiago Auseròn and Carlos Caro, and many more. Catalan traditional festival characters the„Gegants” (the giant people) and „Capgrossos” large heads with little feet will be out in town, alongside the wandering musicians and fire-bearing devils of the „correfoc” processions.
Spectacular and entertaining, the Piromusical will again be closing the festival at Montjuic with a lavish display of fireworks and music. The events take place in all of the city’s major squares, the Plaza del Forum, Av de la Catedral,Rambla Rava, Plaza Catalunya, at the Barceloneta beach, and along the major thoroughfares such as Passeig de Gracia. In other words, you would have to be a hermit to miss this one, so enjoy!
The metro runs 24hrs for the weekend of the 24th, so getting home will be easy. |
