 | Catalunya’s national day commemorates their defeat in 1714 with the Siege of Barcelona and when it fell into the hands of the Bourbons during the war of the Spanish Succession. Many gather in Pl Fossar de les Moreres, next to the Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar, to pay tribute to the many soldiers that fell fighting for Catalunya during this war. A torch of eternal flame stands in their memory all year. The Catalan flag hangs down from balconies and buildings all over the city as residents celebrate their roots and identity. The main official act takes place at the foot of the Arc de Triomf, where political rallies are held, and stalls give information and sell books and t-shirts. There is live music in the evening with local bands taking to the main stage. |
